Observed annually on August 31, National Trail Mix Day honors the mix that was developed as a healthy snack to be taken along on hikes.
It is claimed by some that trail mix was invented in 1968 by two California surfers who blended peanuts and raisins together for an energy snack. However, in the 1958 novel The Dharma Bums, written by Jack Kerouac, trail mix is mentioned when the two main characters describe the planned meals in preparation for their hiking trip.
Trail mix is sometimes referred to as “Gorp”.
WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY
-
Familiarity
Sometimes, when we go out to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, we want everything to be easy. We crave the taste of the familiar and nothing’s more familiar, at least to Americans than a fistful of good ol’ trail mix while backpacking in America’s picturesque national parks.
-
It’s a great meal on-the-go
While some people love to sit down, take their time and leisurely enjoy a snack; other folks like to eat their snacks on the run. For those people, trail mix is an ideal munch. Plus, trail mix has a long shelf life.
-
It’s an uncomplicated snack
Trail mix bag? Check. Hungry hiker? Check. Did hike plan out? Check. Go for it, enjoy the simple things in life. Make sure you hike and explore nature regularly because you’ll be healthier for it.
