Clean Beauty Day

National Clean Beauty Day is celebrated each year on July 15th.

Clean beauty means that the man-made ingredients are clean as long as they’re safe and non-toxic. This also means that clean beauty doesn’t have to be all-natural, preservative-free, etc. Clean beauty is synonymous with non-toxic beauty.

Rather than focus on buzzwords like “natural” and “organic,” switching to clean beauty products focuses on eliminating as many toxins as possible from our daily products.

On July 15th, National Clean Beauty Day urges brands to develop beauty products that are clean and sustainable from the beginning of their life cycle to the end, while educating consumers to seek better product choices. This day brings awareness to the current state of the beauty industry. It also serves as an educational opportunity by improving our clean beauty practices for a more sustainable world.

Clean Beauty Day, is a day to celebrate the clean beauty movement — products that are mindfully created, produced with healthful ingredients, sustainably and ethically sourced, and made with the health of our bodies and the environment in mind.

Until now, Clean Beauty has focused exclusively on formulas and ingredients. Clean beauty has to mean more. It must encompass everything from ingredient sourcing to production methods, focusing on consumer transparency and the desire to innovate for future generations.

Every year, the world produces 260 million tons of plastic with less than 10 percent of it ever being recycled. The rest of the 90 percent ends up in landfills or as litter in our surrounding environment. * Estimates predict that by 2050, the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish.**

This day is a call to action for the beauty industry to create products with clean ingredients while celebrating changemakers creating circular, restorative products. Clean Beauty empowers future generations by creating a more sustainable beauty industry.

More and more, consumers are demanding good-for-you ingredients and environmentally friendly packaging from their products. As the beauty industry responds and begins offers these choices, consumers and the environment will reap the benefits.

July 15, 2020, may be the inaugural celebration of National Clean Beauty Day, but its roots go back more than 15 years. Wellness expert and serial entrepreneur Karen Behnke had spent years in the wellness industry building one of the first corporate wellness companies that she started in the early 1980s, and Karen served on various Board of Directors of fitness companies and more. But as she worked to grow the wellness industry focused on fitness and nutrition, she had not paid much attention to her own personal care products. That is until, at the age of 40 while pregnant with her first child and concerned about skin absorption, Karen developed a keen interest in the ingredients found in the beauty products she was using. She was stunned to find that both her expensive department store and inexpensive drug store products contained potentially harmful ingredients.

Interestingly enough, FEKKAI founded created a similar “National Clean Beauty Day”, on June 4th to celebrate change-makers in the beauty industry who are creating circular, safe products that have consumers in mind. Clean beauty has traditionally focused on formulas and ingredients. We believe it has to mean more. It must encompass everything from ingredient sourcing to production methods, focusing on consumer transparency
