Get Ready Day

Prepare yourself — because the 3rd Tuesday in September is Get Ready Day. Established in 2006 by the American Public Health Association (APHA), the goal of Get Ready Day is to arm individuals, families, and communities with the knowledge that will help them cope with crises such as natural disasters, infectious diseases, and pandemic illnesses. To stay prepared, attend a Get Ready Day event in your area and get yourself — and your loved ones — ready to survive any emergency situation that may come your way. You could save a life, maybe even your own!

Being prepared to deal with an emergency is important for anyone and this is what Get Ready Day is all about. It is staged each year as a way of encouraging individuals, families, and communities to consider what is required in the event of natural disasters, pandemic illnesses, infectious diseases, and other crisis events.

With the onset of COVID-19, prepping has become more popular than ever. It went from a concept of self-reliance to the ability to survive during a pandemic. It’s estimated that 85% of the nation is not ready for a devastating event.

Awareness events like Gey Ready Day help to spread the news about what it takes to prepare for the unexpected. You can’t predict when an emergency will happen, so a good plan for those “just in case” moments is always a good idea.

You can celebrate this day but sitting down with your family and start planning on what you would do in the worst-case scenario. How much food and water do you have on hand? Do you have a pandemic kit? What about a first-aid kit? These are all the things to talk about with your loved ones.
