National Chia Day

On March 23rd, National Chia Day is celebrated to highlight the nutritional benefits and historical significance of chia seeds, recognized as one of the most nutrient-rich foods available. Initially revered by ancient civilizations such as the Maya and Aztecs, chia seeds were valued for their health-enhancing properties and natural energy-boosting abilities. Today, chia seeds have become widely adopted worldwide and frequently incorporated into a variety of foods and beverages.

Chia seeds are acclaimed for their dense nutritional profile, including high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, and complete protein. Notably, chia seeds offer substantial nutritional advantages compared to other common foods:

  • Eight times more Omega-3 fatty acids than salmon.
  • Twenty-five percent more fiber than flaxseed.
  • Thirty percent more antioxidants than blueberries.
  • Twice the potassium content of bananas.
  • Six times more calcium than milk.

Chia seeds’ neutral flavor makes them versatile, allowing easy integration into diverse recipes, thereby enhancing nutritional value without altering taste.

National Chia Day was established in February 2016 by Mamma Chia to celebrate and raise awareness about chia seeds’ significant nutritional attributes. This annual observance has been officially certified by the Registrar at the National Day CalendarĀ® and is now recognized every year on March 23rd.
